Porton Capital Limited

Porton Capital Limited (PCL) is a financial management company focusing on the distribution and management of sophisticated investor funds. As such, PCL provides development capital for technology commercialisation entities. Our three primary areas of focus are:

• private equity investment management
• promotion of technology commercialisation investment funds; and
• corporate finance advice in relation to technology ventures

The Company was founded by Harvey Boulter with its origins linking to the commercialisation of UK military technology. Harvey was the lead advisor to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) in the splitting of what was in the late 1990's Defence Evaluation Research Agency (DERA), a wholly owned part of the UK MoD. The new entities created were the Defence Science and Technology Laboratories (Dstl), and QinetiQ. During the late 1990's it became apparent that DERA had developed some very advanced technology for potential use on the battlefield. Much of this technology had never been exposed to the outside world given the secretive nature of the military activity.

The company and its management team now manage several investment funds that were created to exploit exactly this technology. PCL is the investment manager to Porton Capital Technology funds (PCT). Their specific remit was to commercialise such UK Government technology. The first such investment fund was launched in 2000 and has managed to establish a strong performance track record over this period.

Initially our funds were in partnership with the Dstl, the part that remained an agency of the UK Ministry of Defence. The Dstl is based at Porton Down, Salisbury in the UK. However our commercialisation partners recently expanded to include other UK Government Public Sector Research Establishments (more information can be found under the section headed Venture Partners). In the future this will likely expand further encapsulating UK Universities and potential overseas-based Government research laboratories.

PCL - an independent entity

Naturally the name and identity of Porton Capital Limited is linked in origin with Dstl based at Porton Down. PCL is not however a UK Government entity, but rather a commercial fund management group seeking to exploit UK technology nuggets.

Two roads to investing in military technology commercialisation

All PCT funds are aimed at sophisticated investors. They are available through PCL appointed distributors only. As such our web site is secure in nature and only available to investors and their representatives. Our funds fall into two categories:

• Open-ended, which deal weekly or monthly allowing investors the ability to redeem at a time of their choosing, after the first anniversary; and
• Closed-end, tranche based private equity or development capital funds that typically have a fixed term of 7 years.
