Founded in 2006 with the launch of its flagship Central Asia Hedge Fund, Sturgeon Capital is an independent investment manager focused on Central Asia and the Caucasus. Sturgeon Capital is based in London and is authorized and regulated by the FSA.
The Management
Sturgeon Capital was founded by Clemente Cappello. He is the Central Asia Fund Portfolio Manager and Sturgeon Capital’s CIO.
After travelling throughout the region in 2005 and 2006 he saw that mainstream asset managers were completely absent from the market whilst the emerging energy and resource story along with the re-emergence of the old Silk Route linking Europe to China were creating enormous wealth and attractive investment opportunities throughout the emerging economies for those with a research-led information edge.
Prior to founding Sturgeon Capital, he was an investment analyst at Haussmann Holdings. Previously, Clemente did stints at HSBC Corporate Finance (London) Bear Stearns in derivatives (New York) and Goldman Sachs in the Investment Management Division (London). Clemente holds a degree in Business Administration and Finance from Bocconi University (Milan). In 2008 he was named by Institutional Investor as a Rising Star in Hedge Funds.
Taco Sieburgh Sjoerdsma is CFO of Sturgeon Capital. Taco joined Sturgeon in June 2009 and is responsible for operations and compliance as well as providing research support. Prior to this Taco had been working as Head of Research for 5 years at Liability Solutions, a large hedge fund private placement agent, where he also was Compliance Officer for 2 years. He has been a rated equity analyst at UBS and Commerzbank, Head of Research at Paribas for Asia and Russia (UFG), and worked in senior positions for two hedge fund managers, including a Russia fund and an Emerging Markets Treasury Fund. Taco has an MBA from Booth Chicago and is a CFA charter holder.
